Texas is staring down a GOP runoff that says as much about style as it does about substance. We unpack the stakes in the Cornyn vs Paxton battle, tracing how a seasoned legislator and an embattled attorney general offer two distinct paths for conservative governance. From committee rooms to courtrooms, we compare what each approach delivers on border security, gun policy, DEI fights, and challenges to federal rules on gender identity and election procedures.

We walk through Cornyn’s long record, including the debates around the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and examine how incremental wins, committee leverage, and coalition-building translate into policy. Then we map Paxton’s legal trajectory—indictments, diversion, and acquittal—and explore how his confrontational posture, close alignment with Trump-era priorities, and aggressive litigation strategy energize a populist base while dividing critics and supporters. Along the way, we call out the mudslinging, the meme warfare, and the mailbox avalanche—and offer a practical framework for separating heat from light.

If you care about what truly moves policy, this conversation gives you concrete tools: how to read voting records, where to find primary documents, and why end states in legal cases matter more than headlines. We also highlight the shared ground between the candidates and the decisive differences that will shape Texas’s voice in Washington. Listen, take notes, and decide which outcome best fits your priorities. If this helped you cut through the noise, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review so more Texans can vote with clarity.

Cross Roads Podcast. For Those Who Want to Be in the Know, Whose Your Daddy. Good morning, Crossroads, and welcome to the Crossroads Podcast. I will not be having a YouTube video with this episode due to some cataract surgery that I have, and my eyes look a little funny. So this will just be an audio podcast. I'm your host, Steven Killfoil, and today we're diving into a topic that has been Texas politics buzzing louder than a Circadia Convention in August. Today's episode Election Challenges. What is next? We're talking about the Texas State primary runoff between Senator John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. We'll look at the controversies, the accusations, Trump alignment, negative campaigning, and what might happen next. Now, fair warning, we'll also sprinkle in a little humor here, because if you can't laugh at politics, you probably just end up yelling at your television. Texas of politics has always been lively, but this race? This one has been Texas sized drama. Senator John Cornyn has been in Washington since 2002. He is a rhino, folks. And I'll be honest with you, all my fellow Republicans out there, we need to get rid of these rhinos. Period. They're not doing us any good. They're holding our nation back. They're siding with guys that's gonna line their pockets, and they don't give a rat's ass about our party. Because if they did, they'd line up and fly right. Like the old Pentecostals preachers used to say, you gotta spit white and speak right. Well, Cornyn's not one that does that. When he started, Facebook didn't exist, YouTube didn't exist, and most of us were still using flip phones. Meanwhile, Ken Paxton has been serving as Texas Attorney General and has become one of the most controversial political figures in the state. And when the primary votes came in, neither candidate reached 50%. So you know what that means. Texas voters get a runoff election, which means something very important. More political commercials, more junk mail with political crap on it, more mudslinging, lots of them. Enough to make you wish campaign ads had a mute button like your TV does. Well, let's talk about the candidates now. Cornyn is considered a traditional conservative senator, but like I said, he is a rhino. I'm gonna call him out on the carpet on it. I don't want any more rhinos. We need to get rid of them. We need to set a law in place that limits their time that they can be in this office. And that's the only way we're gonna get rid of rhinos on both sides of the parties. Because I'm pretty sure the Democrats have some rhinos on their side. Anyway, they get in the way. Supporters say he's experienced and effective in Washington's. Critics say he's too willing to compromise. That's what makes him a good rhino. One vote critic brings up often is the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a gun policy compromise bill. Supporters say it improved safety. Critics say it gave Democrats leverage. Welcome to politics, where the same vote can be either heroic or terrible, depending upon who you ask. Ken Paxton. Ken Paxton is Texas Attorney General, and if political controversy were an Olympic sport, Paxton might have a gold medal. He's faced investigations, lawsuits, even impeachment, but he's still in office and now running for Senate, which proves something important about Texas politics. Apparently, anything is possible. Here's a simplified timeline. In 2015, Paxton was indicted on securities fraud charges. The case dragged on for nearly a decade. Eventually, it ended with a pretrial diversion agreement, meaning the charges were dropped after certain conditions were met, so there was no criminal conviction. In 2020, several top aides accused Paxton of abuse of office. They reported their concerns to federal investigators. Years later, the Justice Department decided not to bring charges. But the Texas Senate later acquitted him on all articles, meaning he remained Attorney General. Which in Texas politics is kind of like surviving a tornado and a hailstorm all on the same day. Paxton is widely viewed as strongly aligned with Trump policies. Some examples include supporting aggressive border enforcement, challenging election procedures in 2020, opposing DEI programs, challenging federal gender identity policies. Cornyn also supports many conservative policies, but is sometimes viewed as being more established Republican rhino. So the race has turned into something like Washington Conservative versus Texas Populist Conservative. Both candidates oppose many progressive policies. Paxton has been particularly aggressive in opposing DEI programs. He has issued legal opinions arguing that some DEI initiatives may violate constitutional principles. He has also challenged federal gender identity rules. Cornyn has also opposed several progressive federal policies, but tends to operate more through legislative negotiations. So philosophically they overlap, but their styles are very different. This race has featured some serious political mudslinging. Corner supporters focus on Paxton's legal controversies. Paxton supporters focus on calling Cornyn a rhino. So voters are hearing two very different stories, which means voters have to sort through all the noise and decide what matters most to them, which is what you should all do, no matter what. If you're a Republican or you're a Democrat, sort through, investigate yourself, look into the background of each and every one of your party's candidates, scrutinize them, question them. It's your right as an American citizen. You want the right man or woman for the job that aligns with your beliefs and your party's beliefs. So, but if you don't do your homework and you just go with the flow and vote willy-nilly, you're as bad as the person that doesn't vote as all because you just decided, oh well, I'll do it because they did it. No, no, no, no, no. Drill down, investigate, investigate, investigate. Texas voters now head towards that runoff election, which means the political drama continues. More ads, more debates, more opinions, and probably more memes. Because in modern politics, memes are basically new political cartoons or great work for Saturday Night Live. Yes, they're gonna have lots of fun with this. So no matter who you support, one thing matters most. Stay informed, study the issues, and vote. Above and beyond all things, you must show up to the polls and vote. And this old whiny butt Jasmine Crockett that was saying, oh, the Republicans stole the election out from under me because my people didn't go. Man, if I was black and I was living in Oak Cliff, I'd be as mad as hell. That dumb broad sitting there telling me I'm stupid, I don't know where to go to vote. Oh hell no. Uh-uh. That was wrong. So bottom line, investigate, search, dive deep. Look into these people's backgrounds. Go to the library. There are databases that you can access and dive deep, and you can find out a lot of information on a lot of these people on the stuff that they're doing, both good and bad. Find out what they are. We the people, together, Democrats and Republicans, we need to clean our house and get some of these wishy-washy, long-term politicians out of the swamp, clean it up, and let some intelligent people who really truly have the heart of the people and mind in there so they can do some good. Because democracy only works when citizens participate. If you have any questions, comments, or if you want to be on the show, reach out to us at Crossroads Podcast 2023 at gmail.com.
